The most recent statistics from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles show a unfortunate increase in Motorcycle Accident Fatalities. In 2006 there were only 70 Virginia Motorcycle Accident fatalities. However, in 2007, there were 126 Virginia Motorcycle Accident Fatalities, an 80% increase over the prior year. A full 70% of these Virginia accidents were caused by speed, failure to maintain control, and improper passing.
Over the past number of years there has been a large increase in the numbers of motorcyclists in Virginia. As Motorcycles have increased in popularity, the number of inexperienced motorcyclists has risen as well. Unfortunately, the most recent statistics tend to bear this out, with over 56% of all Virginia Motorcycle Accident fatalities in 2007 being single vehicle accidents.
